Pocket money for kids: how much and from what age
How to work out the amount from what the child pays for, why pocket money shouldn't depend on grades and when to switch to a card.
Since 1 January 2026, Ukraine pays a one-off UAH 50,000 when a child is born. Until the child turns one, parents get UAH 7,000 a month for childcare, and from age one to three, if you have returned to work, UAH 8,000 a month under the eYasla programme to pay for childcare. On top of that there is the baby package (items or UAH 8,451) and UAH 5,000 for a first-grader. Below are the conditions, deadlines and how to apply for each payment.
On 1 January 2026 Ukraine's support for families with children changed: instead of a birth payment spread over three years, the state now pays one large sum at once and then supports parents with separate childcare payments. The legal basis is Law No. 4681-IX and Cabinet Resolution No. 1805 of 31 December 2025. The payments are assigned and paid by the Pension Fund of Ukraine.
| Payment | Amount | When and for how long |
|---|---|---|
| Birth assistance | UAH 50,000 | one-off, apply within 12 months of birth |
| Baby package | items or UAH 8,451 | one-off, apply within 12 months |
| Childcare up to age one | UAH 7,000/mo (UAH 10,500 for a child with a disability) | after maternity leave until age one |
| eYasla | UAH 8,000/mo (UAH 12,000 for a child with a disability) | ages one to three, if the parent works full time |
| School package | UAH 5,000 | one-off, for a first-grader |
This is the first payment, made before the child is born. The amount depends on whether the woman is insured:
For every child born on or after 1 January 2026, one parent or a guardian with whom the child lives permanently receives UAH 50,000 as a lump sum. For twins or triplets, it is paid for each child. The application must be filed no later than 12 months after the birth, otherwise the right to the payment is lost.
The baby package is a set of items for a newborn. Instead, you can choose cash compensation: three subsistence minimums for a child under six on the date of birth, which in 2026 is UAH 8,451 (2,817 × 3). The money is paid to a special account and is meant for children's goods: nappies, clothes, food, a pram, a car seat and so on. Apply within 12 months of the child's birth.
After maternity leave, the mother or another legal representative who actually looks after the child receives UAH 7,000 a month until the child turns one. If the child has a disability, the payment is UAH 10,500. It starts the day after maternity leave or the related payments end.
This assistance is not granted to foster parents, parent-educators or institutions acting as guardians.
When the child turns one, the childcare assistance is replaced by the eYasla programme (Ukrainian “єЯсла”). It is for parents who have returned to full-time work: the state pays UAH 8,000 a month (UAH 12,000 for a child with a disability), from the month after the child's first birthday until age three.
The key difference from other payments is that the money is earmarked. It can only be spent on official childcare services under a contract: a private nursery, a nanny or a playgroup. State and municipal nurseries may not charge for services that are part of their education programme. Your return to work is confirmed with a copy or extract of the employment order.
Here is an example for a child born in 2026. The mother was on postnatal leave for 56 days, then looked after the child until age one and returned to full-time work when the child turned one.
In total that is up to UAH 320,451, of which UAH 128,451 the family receives to use as it sees fit or on children's goods, and UAH 192,000 goes to pay for childcare. The exact childcare amount depends on how long the maternity leave lasts.
Parents, adoptive parents or legal representatives of a child starting first grade this year can receive UAH 5,000 to prepare for school. The money can be spent on books, stationery, school supplies, clothes and shoes for the first-grader. Apply in Diia, under “State assistance”, or at a Pension Fund service centre. You need a Diia.Card with the “Care for the child” account to receive it.
For birth assistance you need a copy of the birth certificate (for a guardian, the guardianship decision) and a Ukrainian passport. Do not leave applications until the end of the term: 12 months pass quickly, and a missed deadline means losing the payment.
Besides payments, parents can pay less tax on their salary. If you support two or more children under 18, the tax social benefit is UAH 1,664 per child, and the income limit for it is UAH 4,660 multiplied by the number of children. For two children, that is a benefit of UAH 3,328 with a salary of up to UAH 9,320. Single parents get a higher benefit of UAH 2,496 per child. You claim it by applying to your employer's accounts department. And for a child's nursery, school or university fees, you can get back 18% of the cost through the tax discount. You can check how take-home pay is calculated in the salary calculator.
The first months with a baby are expensive, and part of the assistance will inevitably go on day-to-day costs. But if you can set aside even part of the money for the child, time will do the rest. For example, UAH 50,000 growing 4% a year faster than inflation for 18 years turns into UAH 101,291 in today's prices, so its purchasing power doubles.
Government bonds and deposits suit this goal; how to compare them after tax is explained in “Deposit or government bonds”. And when the child is older, pocket money is a good way to start learning about money.
