Coupon: what it means

A coupon is the regular interest payment on a bond, usually every six months.

A coupon is the interest payment a bond issuer makes to the holder at regular intervals. On most hryvnia government bonds (OVDP), Ukraine's Ministry of Finance pays a coupon every six months and returns the face value with the final coupon at maturity.

Short bonds may have no coupon. Then the income is the difference between the purchase price and the face value paid back at maturity.

The coupon alone does not show whether a bond is a good deal: what matters is the yield to maturity, which also reflects the purchase price.
