Diversification: what it means

Diversification means spreading money across many assets so that the failure of one does not wreck the whole portfolio.

Diversification means spreading investments across different assets: many companies, sectors, countries, currencies and types of instruments. If one company goes bankrupt or one market falls, the rest of the portfolio softens the losses.

The simplest way to diversify in shares is an index fund: by buying one unit you get a share in hundreds of companies. But even a broad index of one country does not protect you from the whole market falling, so part of the money is kept in bonds, deposits and different currencies.

Diversification reduces risk but does not remove it completely and does not guarantee a profit.
