Limitation period: what it means

The limitation period is the time a creditor has to go to court to recover a debt; the general period in Ukraine is 3 years.

The limitation period is the time within which a creditor or another person can go to court to protect their right, for example to recover a loan debt. The general limitation period in Ukraine is 3 years (Article 257 of the Civil Code).

During quarantine and martial law the limitation period was suspended. Law No. 4434-IX restarted it from 4 September 2025.

A court applies the limitation period only if a party to the case raises it. The period is interrupted if the debtor acknowledges the debt, for example by making a partial payment, and then starts again. Expiry of the period does not erase the debt from your credit history.
