Deposit or government bonds: which pays more after tax
Why the same rate gives you different money in hand, how to compare a deposit and bonds in 10 seconds and how to combine the two.
A deposit is money you place with a bank for a set term or on demand, and the bank pays you interest for it.
A deposit, or bank savings account, is an agreement under which you hand money to a bank and the bank undertakes to return it with interest. A term deposit is placed for a set period; a demand deposit can be withdrawn at any time, but usually pays less.
In Ukraine the bank withholds personal income tax of 18% and military levy of 5% from deposit interest, so you receive less than the headline rate. Individuals' deposits are guaranteed by the Deposit Guarantee Fund.
Before opening a deposit, compare the after-tax rate, early withdrawal terms, whether you can top up and whether interest is capitalised.
