Money mule: what it means

A money mule is a person whose card or account is used to move other people's, often criminal, money.

A money mule, called a «drop» in Ukraine, is the owner of a card or account used to move money for fraudsters, illegal casinos or other criminal schemes. Mules are recruited through ads offering «easy money»: for a fee, people are asked to open a card and hand it over, or share access to the banking app.

Because of the fight against money mules, Ukrainian banks have tightened checks on card-to-card transfers and may stop suspicious transactions. On 28 October 2026, the Verkhovna Rada passed a law on criminal liability for handing over your cards and accounts for fraud.

Never give anyone your card, login details or access to your banking app, not even people you know.
