SWIFT transfer: what it means

A SWIFT transfer is an international bank-to-bank transfer via the SWIFT network; it needs an IBAN, a Latin-script name and the bank code.

SWIFT is an international network through which banks in different countries exchange payment messages. A SWIFT transfer goes from the sender's account to the recipient's account, often through one or more correspondent banks, and usually takes one to several business days.

A transfer needs the recipient's IBAN, their name in Latin letters, the bank's name and SWIFT code (BIC), and sometimes a correspondent bank. The sender chooses who pays the fees: all by the sender (OUR), each side its own (SHA) or all deducted from the transfer (BEN).

In Ukraine you can receive money from abroad via SWIFT with no NBU limits. Since 11 August 2026 sending abroad from hryvnia accounts and from a currency account is possible within UAH 200,000 a month for each type of operation.
