Securities account: what it means

A securities account is an account at a custodian recording your shares, bonds or fund units. In Ukraine it is opened at a bank or an investment firm.

A securities account is an account at a custodian on which the securities you own are recorded: shares, bonds including Ukrainian government bonds, and investment fund units. In Ukraine it is opened at a bank or investment firm licensed by the National Securities and Stock Market Commission for custody, usually remotely through an app.

The securities in such an account belong to you, not to the institution, so they are not part of its assets. The Deposit Guarantee Fund does not cover them, but if the institution loses its licence, the securities are transferred to another custodian.

Buying foreign securities recorded in the Ukrainian depository system counts towards the NBU monthly limit of UAH 200,000, together with currency and bank metals. During martial law foreign securities cannot be moved out of the Ukrainian depository system, so they cannot be transferred to a foreign broker.
